Elm Commission reviews spring fungicide, planting, and tree-care plans

HARVARD — Elm Commission sets spring planting schedule and flags care-resources shortfall. The four-member Commission plans to plant a disease-resistant American elm at the library in early May and to trim young trees before April's end, with mulching of town-corridor trees expected in early June. Annual elm fungicide injections were estimated at $2,407.
A critical gap emerged: school personnel did not reliably water trees at Harvard Elementary last year, resulting in two trees' loss, and the Commission lacks resources to sustain care for the 35 to 46 trees there. Member JC Ferguson is pursuing a grant for additional plantings, but the Commission stressed that long-term watering and maintenance across town sites--Bromfield, the library, Town Hall, and the school--require a sustainable, annually budgeted plan.
